Where feet per second shows up

Feet per second is the everyday unit of physics problems and American engineering: it is what you get when you measure distance in feet and time in seconds, with no unit conversion buried inside. A falling object accelerates at 32.2 feet per second squared. A baseball leaves a fast pitcher's hand near 140 fps. A rifle bullet leaves the muzzle at 2,000 to 3,000 fps.

The clean relationship worth memorizing is 88 fps = 60 mph, because 60 mph is 88 feet every second, or one mile every 60 seconds. That is why 88 shows up so often in stopping-distance and reaction-time math: at 60 mph you cover nearly a full car length in the quarter second it takes to move your foot to the brake. Radar and lidar guns measure in feet per second internally, then display mph.
