Motorway lane rule
A vehicle towing a trailer must not use the right-hand lane of a motorway with three or more lanes, except where directed by signs or police. The restriction applies even when traffic is light.
The 60 mph towing maximum is a ceiling, not a target. Crosswinds, trailer loading, tyre condition and snaking can require a much lower safe speed. The Highway Code advises easing off the accelerator and reducing speed gently if a trailer begins to snake, rather than braking harshly.
Before setting off
- Confirm the car, licence and towbar are permitted for the trailer weight.
- Check trailer tyres, lights, brakes and the secondary coupling device.
- Distribute heavy items low and close to the axle, within nose-weight limits.
- Fit towing mirrors when the trailer obstructs the rearward view.
- Allow substantially more stopping distance and avoid sudden steering or braking.
Frequently asked questions
What is the UK motorway speed limit when towing?
60 mph, unless a lower variable or permanent limit is displayed.
What is the towing limit on a single carriageway?
50 mph. This is 10 mph below the national limit for a car not towing.
Can I use the outside motorway lane with a caravan?
Not on a motorway with three or more lanes. A towing vehicle must not use the right-hand lane except when directed.
Does the towing limit apply to a small trailer?
Yes. The reduced national limits apply when a car or motorcycle is towing a caravan or trailer, regardless of whether the trailer feels light.
