What average speed actually means
Average speed is total distance divided by total time. That is the whole rule. If you drove 120 miles and it took 2 hours, your average speed was 60 mph, no matter how fast or slow you went at any single moment along the way.
The common mistake is to average the speed numbers instead. People add up the speeds they remember hitting, divide by how many there were, and call that the average. That only works if you spent equal time at each speed, which almost never happens. The honest answer is always the same: measure how far you went, measure how long it took, and divide.

Average speed vs instantaneous speed
A trip that averages 60 mph still had moments at 0 mph at a red light and moments at 80 mph on an open stretch. Average speed flattens all of that into one number. Instantaneous speed is what the needle or GPS reads at a single instant. The two are different questions: one describes the whole journey, the other a single point in time.
This is where two-leg trips trip people up. Suppose you drive 60 mph to a town and 30 mph back over the same distance. The instinct is to say the average is 45 mph. It is not. The slow leg takes twice as long, so it dominates the total time. Work it out with real numbers: 60 miles out at 60 mph takes 1 hour, and 60 miles back at 30 mph takes 2 hours. That is 120 miles in 3 hours, which is 40 mph, not 45. This is the harmonic mean, and it always pulls the answer toward the slower speed.
Worked examples

Road trip: 300 miles, total elapsed time 5 hours 30 minutes including a lunch stop.
300 ÷ 5.5 = 54.5 mph (about 87.8 km/h). The stop is why it lands below the highway limit.

Running a 10K (6.214 mi) in 52 minutes 30 seconds.
6.214 ÷ (52.5 ÷ 60) = 7.1 mph (about 11.4 km/h), a pace near 8:27 per mile.

A flight covering 2,475 miles gate to gate in 5 hours 15 minutes.
2,475 ÷ 5.25 = 471.4 mph (about 758.7 km/h), well under cruise speed because of taxi and climb.

FAQ
How do you calculate average speed?
Divide the total distance traveled by the total time taken. Cover 120 miles in 2 hours and your average speed is 120 ÷ 2 = 60 mph. Express the time in hours so the result comes out per hour.
Is average speed the same as the average of speeds?
No. Average speed is total distance over total time, not the arithmetic mean of the speeds you hit. Averaging the speed numbers only works if you spent equal time at each speed, which is rare on a real trip.
What is a good average speed for a road trip?
Long highway trips usually average 55 to 65 mph (about 88 to 105 km/h) once you count fuel stops, traffic, and slower sections. The posted limit may be 70 mph, but the door-to-door average is almost always lower.
How do I find average speed with two different speeds?
If both legs cover the same distance, do not average the two speeds. Go 60 mph one way and 30 mph back over the same distance and your average is 40 mph, not 45. Use total distance divided by total time; the slower leg takes longer and weighs more.
Why is my average speed lower than my top speed?
Average speed includes every stopped second, every slowdown, and every acceleration. Top speed is one instant. With all those slower moments folded in, the average always sits below the highest speed you reached.
