Speeding points in all 50 states
This table describes the usual state driver-record treatment for an ordinary speeding conviction. It is a comparison, not a ticket calculator: exact points depend on speed, road, licence type and whether the conviction is ordinary speeding, reckless driving or another offence.
States without a conventional point system still keep convictions on the driving record. Insurers, courts and licensing agencies can act on the record even where no numbered points are added.

Points are only part of the cost
- A conviction can increase insurance premiums even when a state adds no licence points.
- Out-of-state convictions may be reported through interstate agreements and treated under the home-state system.
- School-zone, work-zone, novice-driver and high-speed offences can carry extra consequences.
- Commercial driver licences are governed by additional federal and state rules.
- Defensive-driving or traffic-school options vary by court and are not automatic.
When points can suspend a licence
Every point state uses its own lookback period and suspension threshold. New York, for example, uses an 18-month accumulation window for its point calculation, while Virginia classifies violations as 3, 4 or 6 demerit points and applies separate rules by age and record. Do not compare only the number: five points in one state may not carry the same risk as five in another.
Frequently asked questions
How many points is a speeding ticket?
It depends on the state and speed. A minor ticket is often 1-3 points, while high-speed offences can add 4-11 or more. Some states do not use a conventional point system.
Do camera speeding tickets add points?
Many camera tickets are civil citations issued to the vehicle owner and add no driver points, but this is not universal. Check the law where the camera operates.
Do out-of-state speeding points follow you?
The conviction can be shared and your home state may apply its own treatment. The exact reciprocity rule depends on both states.
How long do speeding points stay?
The active point period varies by state and can differ from how long the conviction remains visible on the driving record or to insurers.
