Trailer Tongue Weight Calculator

Check actual or estimated hitch weight against the loaded trailer weight, not the empty brochure number.

Updated 2026-08-12

For a conventional travel trailer, a common planning range is 10-15% of loaded trailer weight. Manufacturer instructions and measured axle weights control; fifth wheels commonly use a higher pin-weight percentage.
Tongue-weight check

Why tongue weight matters

Too little tongue weight can make a conventional trailer unstable and prone to sway. Too much can overload the tow vehicle payload, rear axle, tires or receiver. The correct target comes from the trailer and tow-vehicle manufacturers.

  • Calculate from the trailer as actually loaded for travel.
  • Include batteries, propane, water and cargo added after the published dry weight.
  • A weight-distribution hitch can redistribute axle load but does not create extra payload or raise a rating.

Frequently asked questions

What is a safe tongue-weight percentage?

A conventional travel trailer is commonly planned at 10-15 percent of loaded trailer weight. Always follow the trailer and tow-vehicle instructions.

Is dry hitch weight accurate?

It is only a starting point. Batteries, propane, water and cargo placement can materially change the real loaded tongue weight.

Does a weight-distribution hitch reduce tongue weight?

It redistributes some load across axles but does not erase tongue weight or increase the vehicle ratings.
