RV Towing Capacity & Payload Calculator

Enter the ratings from your tow vehicle labels and the real loaded trailer weight to see which limit controls your setup.

Updated 2026-08-12

A safe-looking tow rating is not enough. Your setup must pass payload, tow rating, GVWR and GCWR at the same time, and tongue or fifth-wheel pin weight counts against the tow vehicle payload.
Estimated setupChecking all four limits

Planning estimate only. Verify the exact VIN-specific manual, labels, hitch, axle and tire ratings, then weigh the loaded rig.

The four limits this calculator checks

  • Tow rating: loaded trailer weight cannot exceed the vehicle manufacturer rating.
  • Payload: passengers, cargo, hitch hardware and tongue or pin weight all consume the door-sticker payload allowance.
  • GVWR: the loaded tow vehicle must remain below its Gross Vehicle Weight Rating.
  • GCWR: the complete loaded combination must remain below its Gross Combined Weight Rating.

Use loaded weights, not brochure dry weight

Travel-trailer dry weight normally excludes water, food, clothing, batteries and camping gear. This calculator adds those items before estimating tongue weight. For a final check, weigh the loaded combination axle by axle at a certified scale.

A passing estimate does not override the vehicle manual, certification label, hitch rating, axle ratings or tire limits. The lowest applicable rating controls.

Frequently asked questions

Can my truck tow an RV if the trailer is below its tow rating?

Not necessarily. Payload, GVWR, GCWR, hitch, axle and tire ratings can be reached before the advertised tow rating.

Does tongue weight count against payload?

Yes. Tongue or pin weight presses on the tow vehicle and must be counted with passengers, cargo, accessories and hitch hardware.

Should I use trailer dry weight or GVWR?

Use an honest loaded estimate and test the trailer GVWR as a worst-case planning value. A scale weight is better once the trailer is loaded.

What safety margin should I keep?

There is no universal percentage that replaces manufacturer ratings. Many owners plan below every maximum to leave room for weighing error, changing cargo and difficult conditions.
